May 18, 2010 (newstodate): Russia has proposed a partnership with the USA to jointly resume production of the AN-124 Ruslan freighter aircraft.
First flown in 1982, the AN-124 can lift up to 150 tonnes of cargo, which is 25 percent more than its existing US pendant, the Galaxy.
Several attempts have been made to re-start production of the aircraft, and Volga-Dnepr is known to have placed orders for a up to five new aircraft in addition to the 10 aircraft already in its fleet.
Due to its unsurpassed capacity to lift odd-size and heavy shipments, the AN-124 is also widely used by US and other western customers, including also military customers.
