May 04, 2010 (newstodate): Norwegian fresh salmon is an attractive commodity for consumers as well as for providers of transportation and logistics.
Projects for new air transport solutions to the main markets in the Far East as well as in the Americas are popping up constantly - but most prove to be short-lived, which does not, however, deter fresh initiatives from developing.
Among these is the Norwegian project Arctic AirCargo that was founded in 2007 by Eirik Iversen and Svein Aage Ronning.
-The crux for the optimal solution to the exporters of fresh salmon in the northern part of Norway remains time-to-market, and while we have seen several projects in the market these have all entailed long trucking distances to airports in either northern Sweden or to Oslo Gardermoen, as is also the case with existing solutions by carriers with hubs in Helsinki, Copenhagen and Frankfurt, says Svein Aage Ronning.
-Our aim is to set up a dedicated freighter service from an airport in the region, with Bodoe, Evenes, Tromsoe or Lakselv as the best options.
-As every other project, however, we have to face the challenge of securing a balanced operation as a precondition for successful and enduring operations.
-Our project was moving quite fast till recently when it was hurt, like everyone else, by the global financial crisis. We rely on external financing of our project, so we have been forced to slow down again waiting for better conditions to return.
-Arctic AirCargo will either charter freighter aircraft itself, or cooperate with an existing provider of air cargo transport. In either case we remain convinced that our business concept remains valid and will be put into operation, hopefully already in 2010, or shortly thereafter, says Mr Ronning.
