May 10, 2010 (newstodate): A group of specialists with profound experienced from Norwegian salmon logistics are carving a niche with a new forwarding and logistics company, Salmosped AS, based in Oslo.
Behind Salmosped, starting business from March 1, 2010, are Petter, Lasse and Morten Wangen who together with Morten Svendsen constitute the Board, with Morten Svendsen as managing director.
-Compared to the large players, Schenker Northern Cargo, DHL Danzas Quality Cargo or Kuehne & Nagel, Salmosped is only a small company but hopes are that our experience and understanding of the market's needs will secure us a place in the industry, says Morten Svendsen.
-We found that there is a need for one more provider, and we are now building up relations with operators in the industry, most of whom are already known to us. But aside from our knowledge of the industry there is probably not much to separate us from other providers at this stage.
-We are not ourselves directly involved in any of the projects for freighter services out of Norway, but we do agree that there is indeed a need for more direct uplift capacity. Most Norwegian salmon remains trucked from Norway to airports in Europe including the UK, and a direct service will always be a superior product.
-I personally do not subscribe to the conclusion that cargo rates for salmon are too low to warrant a freighter service. After all, salmon rates follow the general trends in rates that have increased significantly during the recent period of time, and they do not lag behind.
-One example that salmon is an attractive airfreight commodity is provided by Korean Air Cargo that has been rather successful and dedicated to serving this market while others have come and gone, says Mr Svendsen.
It is generally assumed that DHL Danzas Quality Cargo is #1 in Norway's salmon logistics with some 40 percent of the market, followed by Schenker Northern Cargo with some 13 percent, and Kuehne & Nagel with some 10 percent of the volumes.
