May 28, 2010 (newstodate): Forwarders focusing on serving Norway's seafood exporting business are working hard to secure uplift capacity on routes to markets in Asia and the USA.
-It is not a new situation but conditions are certainly not getting any better, says Morten Svendsen, Salmosped managing director.
-During the recent period many carriers have cut routes, reduced frequencies and in many cases replaced aircraft with smaller types offering less cargo capacity while many freighters have been parked in the desert - all contributing to stronger pressure on the market.
-Also higher costs of fuel and security, as well as various industrial disputes have added stress to the market, with temporary back-logs, rates hikes and fight for capacity in its wake.
-We have also seen the suspension of the otherwise very welcome and important addition to the market, the Sundt Atlanta Skybridge freighter service from Oslo to the USA, which is a further draw-back. Happily, legacy carriers like Singapore Airlines Cargo, Asiana and Korean Air Cargo are operating their Scandinavian freighters with a firm commitment to the market.
-But anyhow, the bulk of Norway's exports of seafood is trucked into continental airports, and we have fixed allotments with many airlines, so we manage - albeit with intensified workloads, says Mr Svendsen.
