May 20, 2010 (newstodate): Close to the volcanic centre, Icelandair Cargo has had to fight to keep its freighter services in the air since the first eruptions in April.
One of the measures taken has been to move freighter operations from Keflavik Airport to Akureyri Airport in the northern part of the island when the capital airport had to close down due to the ash cloud in the last week of April and again in second week of May.
The company thus managed to basically maintain its scheduled cargo traffic, albeit with prolonged delivery and pick-up times for the forwarders due to the extensive trucking activities.
