May 27, 2010 (newstodate): Iceland's volcano ash clouds spelled a bad welcome to the new freighter service at Denmark's Billund Airport - but prospects are promising.
Since April 6, 2010, the company has stationed one Boeing 757-200F aircraft at Billund Airport, flying in from Leipzig in the morning and going back to Leipzig again in the night, connecting western Denmark more closely to the DHL hub at Leipzig and offering the market improved cut-off and delivery times.
-Only two days after our start, the airspace closed down and this was of course a huge problem for us as for everyone else, says Michael Hovgaard Poulsen, DHL Express.
-Consequently, the April figures are disappointing, but we are anyhow very satisfied with the reception in the market for our new services, and we have landed signatures to our first contracts from customers that have thus been convinced by our competitive edge.
-The new freighter operation is one ingredient in our new approach to the western Danish market, the other being the opening by July 30 of our new terminal at Taulov, also in western Denmark. Together these initiatives will bolster our position significantly.
-Among the current positive signs we are now seeing export volumes growing week by week, indicating a recovery in the market, says Mr Hovgaard Poulsen.
