Apr 22, 2010 (newstodate): While the Icelandic volcano eruption spread its clouds over much of Europe forcing aviation to a halt, it proved a blessing to others.
One of the airports to reap the benefits was Madrid Airport where Iberia Cargo reports an increase by 40 percent, y-o-y, in cargo volumes handled so far into April 2010.
Totals include 41.5 percent more export and 51.60 percent more import cargo in April.
This increase is partly due to the closing of airports in Northern and Central Europe for the past six days because of the volcanic ash cloud, which caused operations to be shunted to the Iberia Cargo Terminal.
The traffic comprised freighter flights between Madrid and the Americas, connecting to a trucking network between Madrid and the rest of Europe.
