Apr 27, 2010 (newstodate): The world financial and economic crisis took a heavy toll on Russia's airlines, reducing the number of operating carriers.
In 2006 there were 200 airlines registered for passenger and cargo transportation, and this volume has dropped to 168 carriers registered with Rosaviatsia.
But already in 2006 estimates were that consolidation would reduce the number to 25 as has also now been reaffirmed by Vitaly Savelyev, Aeroflot CEO speaking at an event in London.
In the Soviet times, Russia's airlines carried about 130 mio passengers annually, and this volume has decreased to "only" 45 mio passengers, leaving little room for 168 carriers.
