Apr 08, 2010 (newstodate): Russia's new Gelendzhik Airport, in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, will launch operations from May 9, 2010.
The new airport will replace the existing WW II military airfield, Krasnodar Airport that today accepts only small aircraft, but Krasnodar Airport will still have a role as an alternative for regional traffic.
Operated by Russia's Basic Element conglomerate BazEL, Gelendzhik Airport will have one 3,100 m runway with approach from the Black Sea, and besides passenger traffic cargo operations are envisaged as well.
BazEL has invested up to USD60 mio in reconstruction of Gelendzhik Airport, including building a new passenger terminal and renovating the airport's technical equipment.
Already before the opening of the airport, applications by various carriers to operate 57 weekly flights have been received.
