Apr 08, 2010 (newstodate): Based on a sustained rise in demand for cargo uplift capacity between Europe and Asia, Finnair Cargo is soon to announce its decision on the launch of a freighter service.
According to a centrally placed source within the company, Finnair Cargo plans to release details before the end of next week, in time for launch of services from summer or autumn 2010, already.
The aircraft is easily available as Finnair has taken back two MD-11 aircraft from now-defunct Aeroflot-Cargo that converted the aircraft from passenger to cargo version.
It is widely expected that the routes to be operated by Finnair Cargo will focus on connecting Helsinki with destinations in China and Asia, including possibly India, but trans-Atlantic flights may also be offered.
Finnair Cargo earlier operated freighters on various routes in cooperation with partners including both Asian and trans-Atlantic flights, but left the freighter market entirely by August 14, 2009, when its cooperation with Cargolux on a route between Helsinki and Hong Kong served since November 26, 2004, was ended.
