Apr 14, 2010 (newstodate): After sharing the plights of the crisis with other carriers, Lufthansa Cargo is again emerging as a successful company after a strong growth in volumes through this year's Q1.
From January to March, 2010, the company handled a total of 390,000 tonnes of freight and mail - an increase by 19.3 percent, y-o-y.
The highest growth rates were achieved in the Americas traffic region, which reported 27.8 percent growth, and Asia/Pacific, which saw a 21.7 percent growth.
During the period, capacity was cut by two percent, resulting in cargo load factors rising by 14.2 percentage points to 71.8 percent boosted by the 22.2 percent sales increase to 1.9 billion tonne-kilometers.
Consequently, Lufthansa Cargo is now readying to increase capacity again, planning the return of the first two of the four MD-11F aircraft currently grounded at Victorville, California.
The first MD-11F will start operations in June, followed by the second in October, according to a Lufthansa Cargo spokesman.
