Apr 09, 2010 (newstodate): Latvian provider of ground handling services, North Hub Services will stick to its plans for expanding its business into Estonia's Tallinn Airport before the end of this year.
Talking to newstodate, Tallinn Airport's chairman of the board, Mr Rein Loik recently made clear that the ground handling market at Tallinn Airport will not be opened up for competition until passenger volumes hit the two-million mark.
-Until then, airlines are allowed to establish self-handling at the airport if they so want, but the market will not be opened up for third-party ground handling by a second handling agent as long as volumes are below two million passengers, said Mr Loik.
So North Hub Services will continue its preparations to enter Tallinn Airport as provider of self-handling to the Latvian carrier airBaltic that is setting up a new operational base at the airport from June 1, 2010.
-We will then just sit there and wait for the airport to reach two million passengers per year, says Janis Balkens, North Hub Services CEO.
North Hub Services was set up at Riga, Latvia, in August 2009 by Baltijas Aviacijas Sistemas that is also holding 47.2 percent of the shares in the Latvian carrier airBaltic.
