Apr 16, 2010 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier airBaltic will now start its evaluation of which aircraft type to select for its forthcoming fleet expansion and modernization.
-Plans are to place orders for up to 30 new narrow-body aircraft to replace our current fleet comprising 10 737-500, eight 737-300 and two 757-200, says Janis Vanags, airBaltic VP Corporate Communications.
-The first aircraft should enter the fleet already before the end of this year, with all deliveries to be completed before the end of 2013.
-The choice will obviously be between Boeing 737NG and Airbus A320 Family aircraft, but we will definitely go for a single aircraft type fleet to be acquired by a mix of operating and financial lease contracts.
The carrier is soon to take delivery of its first new Bombardier Q400 aircraft, with all eight units ordered in the fleet by the start of the coming winter schedule.
In the existing fleet are also 11 Fokker 50 aircraft that may serve with airBaltic till 2013.
