Mar 25, 2010 (newstodate): Serbia's No 2 international airport, Nis Constantine the Great Airport is fighting a hard battle to stay in business as traffic has dwindled.
As a last-ditch effort, the authorities of Nis, Serbia's third-largest city, has decided to buy a fixed allotment on the flights of the two remaining airline operators, Montenegro Airlines and Wind Jet.
The City's allotments are 40 seats on each flight by Montenegro Airlines, and 100 seats on each flight by Wind Jet, translating into a payment to the airline for unsold seats within the set agreement.
Montenegro Airlines operates six weekly flights from Nis to Podgorica, in Montenegro, while Wind Jet operates once a week to Forli, Italy.
The City's decision was prompted by lack of response from 30 airlines contacted with offers to launch flights to and from Nis Airport.
Nis Airport's plights stem from the division of former Serbia-Montenegro into its constituent parts, which meant a loss of market for the airport.
Another factor working against the airport is Serbia's refusal to allow low-cost operators into the airport.
