Mar 19, 2010 (newstodate): Icelandair, Boeing's first customer in Europe for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, may never itself operate the new aircraft when delivered.
In February 2005, Icelandair became the first European carrier to place an order with Boeing for delivery of the 787 Dreamliner.
The carrier initially placed a firm order for two Dreamliner aircraft, with options for five more aircraft, later changing two options into firm orders in April, 2006.
The first two Boeing 787 aircraft were due to arrive in 2010, with the next to follow by 2012, but Boeing later postponed these deliveries by some 28 months.
The Icelandair Group's aircraft acquisitions are handled by Icelease, a business unit specializing in aircraft trading in the international marketplace.
On its website, Icelandair sees the aircraft orders as investments which will generate profit when sold, and expects that the Boeing 787 order positions could become very valuable in a recovering market.
So far, the Group has announced that its first Boeing 787 will be placed with Czech company Travel Service, 50 percent owned by the Icelandair Group, and another Boeing 787 has been leased to Air Niugini from its delivery in 2014.
