Mar 10, 2010 (newstodate): The notion of the formation of a Pan-Baltic airline to serve the markets of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is still under consideration at governmental levels.
Among the airline in the Baltic region, Latvia's airBaltic has emerged as the most successful carrier, expanding its services between and from all three countries at a fast pace.
airBaltic is, therefore, poised to play a crucial role if the governments of the three countries decide to pool their efforts to form a joint carrier, and Latvia's Riga Airport has also outperformed other airports in the Baltic region in traffic and passenger volumes.
-The formation of a Pan-Baltic airline remains a political issue, says Bertolt Flick, airBaltic President & CEO.
-It is the politicians of the three countries that must make up their minds about what is good for their airlines and what strategy should be followed to achieve their target.
-But not least the experience in Lithuania has convinced everyone of the critical importance of the provision of air services to a country.
-A Pan-Baltic carrier should of course have a central hub, and as for Riga Airport as an option I can only say that few years ago, Copenhagen Airport was marketed as the hub for the Baltic region!
-On the three options Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius, one has to look into the situation in the aviation market to identify the location that has the largest business potential and the best provision of flight connections, says Mr Flick.
