Mar 25, 2010 (newstodate): The Finnish airfreight market is reacting positively to Finnair Cargo's plans for a revival of freighter services from this summer.
-The project is indeed sound, and I find this a wise decision by Finnair Cargo as they have the MD-11F aircraft at their disposal to supplement the cargo capacity of their passenger aircraft, says Ari Ruuskanen, Panalpina Finland sales & project manager.
-It is obvious that there is room for Finnair Cargo Asian freighter services on the inbound routes to Finland, but while the Finnish market may in itself be too small to fill up the flights towards Asian destinations, the volumes to be attracted from the other Nordic markets will fill up much of the excess capacity. Also Finnair Cargo may benefit from its excellent relations to other oneworld partner airlines.
-Trucking times between the Scandinavian markets and Helsinki are much shorter than trucking times from Scandinavia to and from continental airports like Frankfurt and Luxembourg, so the lead-times will benefit the introduction of Finnair Cargo's freighter options.
-Finnair Cargo holds a high reputation as a reliable and long-term partner, and the MD-11F is absolutely superior as a freighter aircraft compared to e.g. the Boeing 747 freighter.
-During the recent month Finnair Cargo has been talking to shippers and forwarders to gather market intelligence and seek opinions on destinations and capacity needs, so we are all eager to learn what will eventually be presented.
-There is of course much politics involved in obtaining traffic rights and slots, so we will have to wait and see. But the decision to go for freighter services to Asia is definitely well-advised, says Mr Ruuskanen.
