Mar 09, 2010 (newstodate): The Faroe Islands' carrier Atlantic Airways expects to introduce the new Airbus A319 aircraft into service during first quarter of 2012.
The delivery of the new aircraft is timed to coincide with the completion of the extension of the runway at Vagar Airport as well as the construction of new passenger facilities.
The airport project will allow for better utilization of the aircraft serving the airport where the existing short 1,200 m runway puts limits on maximum take-off weight.
In its latest annual report covering 2009, the airline's results showed a significant loss due to the effect of the global economic crisis and the weak demand in the market.
The carrier saw passenger volumes modestly down by six percent in transportation between the Faroe Islands and Denmark, but the other business segments including charter and ACMI operations outside the Faroes as well as helicopter operations were severely hit by the crisis.
