Mar 01l 2010 (newstodate): The Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport has now closed the tender for extension of the airport's runway, and four of five pre-qualified bidders handed in their final offers.
Participating in the tender were Icelandic Adalverktakarar hf, E. Phil & Son Faroes, MT Hojgaard Faroes, ArtiCon Joint Venture, and J&K Petersen Contractors that delivered the lowest offer in the tender.
Together with consultants, the airport will now analyze the bids further before announcing the final contract winner after further negotiations.
Bids were asked for two models - one comprising a new 1,600 m runway, another comprising a new 1,799 m runway.
The airport is currently operating a 1,200 m runway that precludes operations by larger aircraft without a weight penalty.
The project must be completed before the delivery by the end of 2011 of the first Airbus A319 aircraft to Atlantic Airways that provides the bulk of the air traffic.
