Mar 12, 2010 (newstodate): Competition will increase even more in Estonia's air transport world as the Latvian carrier airBaltic firms up plans for establishing a new operational base at Tallinn Airport in 2010.
According to media reports, airBaltic will open at least eight new routes at Tallinn Airport, including five routes connecting to destinations in Finland.
Two of these have already been announced, to connect Tallinn with Tampere and Oulu.
airBaltic started operations between Tallinn and Riga on September 15, 2004, and Estonian traffic through Riga Airport has since build up extensively.
airBaltic's decision to open a new base at Tallinn Airport will also provide the basis for the new Latvian ground handling provider, North Hub Services to expand into Estonia breaking the existing monopoly by the airport's own handling company, Tallinn airport GH, as earlier reported by newstodate.
North Hub Services has been established by Baltijas Aviacijas Sistemas owned by Bertolt Flick, who is also the president and CEO of the Latvian carrier airBaltic that now carries about 50 percent of the passengers in the three Baltic states.
Mr Flick's Baltijas Aviacijas Sistemas also owns 47.2 percent of the shares in airBaltic.
