Mar 09, 2010 (newstodate): After a promising start to the new year, indicating a recovery in the cargo business, Finnair saw the positive trend continuing in February.
In February the carrier's total cargo volumes were up 24 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 7,808 tonnes, with a growth in all segments excluding domestic cargo that was down 16.6 percent to a mere 198 tonnes.
The over-all growth was as always dominated by the Far Eastern traffic where volumes grew by 33.7 percent, y-o-y, to 5,350 tonnes.
European volumes grew by 5.4 percent to 1,436 tonnes, and the trans-Atlantic volumes were also up by 25.5 percent to 636 tonnes.
The sustained growth in the carrier's Asian traffic is supporting the project, still under consideration, of a new dedicated freighter service between Finland and Asia, using the MD-11F aircraft that has been returned to Finnair after a brief service with the now defunct Aeroflot-Cargo.
Finnair has earlier announced that a final decision will be made before summer 2010.
