Mar 09, 2010 (newstodate): 2010 is offering the first signs of normality returning in Scandinavia's air cargo business with the Far East after a prolonged period of over-capacity, rock-bottom rates and low market demands.
-Needless to say, imports from China still by far outweigh the volumes of exports from the Scandinavian markets, but we are seeing that demand for airfreight capacity to the Chinese and Far Eastern markets is now building up again, translating into rising rates after a long period of exceedingly low levels, says Torben Pedersen, Kales Denmark branch manager in Copenhagen.
-Also rates for sea transportation are increasing again, slowing down or even stopping the flow of shipments from air to sea as was the case earlier.
-All in all, the industry is showing signs of recovery and a return to more normal conditions, which is also necessary to allow all parties in the transportation industry to make sound business, says Mr Pedersen.
Several major airlines increased their ex-Scandinavia air cargo rates by January 1, 2010, and a second rates increase has been announced with effect from April 1, 2010.
