Feb 12, 2010 (newstodate): Sweden's Orebro Airport took its share of the the general downturn in Sweden's airfreight volumes in 2009 - but not that hard..
-2009 was indeed a difficult year for us as for everyone else, but we still handled a total of 20,000 tonnes of cargo, which was a decline by 17 percent, y-o-y, compared to the over-all 20-30 percent decline in the market, says Hakan Nilsson, Orebro Airport cargo manager.
Orebro Airport's volumes have generally fallen between 20,000 and 30,000 tonnes, so the result in 2009 is still within the normal range.
Since the start in 1996 of cargo operations at Orebro, the airport has thrived on significant volumes of ad-hoc freighter operations driven primarily by Ericsson, and express companies like TNT that, however, moved its liege-operations away from Orebro.
Today, the airport's cargo business is mostly driven by Swedish military operations in support of international operations, as well as temporary relief flight operations.
