Feb 16, 2010 (newstodate): May 1, 2010 will see the opening of a new perishables handling facility and BIP at Sweden's Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
Behind the project is Nordic Airport Properties, building for the Norwegian logistics company APH that will lease the facility to offer handling of perishables not only for transportation by air, but also by other modes of transportation including trucks and railway.
APH Logistics will also take over the operation of the airport's BIP for inspection of imports and exports of live animals on behalf of Luftfartsverket, integrating this operation in the same facility.
-Compared to airports like Amsterdam, Oslo, Frankfurt, Copenhagen and many others, Stockholm Airport has so far had only a tiny share at about 5,000 tonnes per year of the perishables handling market, due to lack of facilities, says Einar Longva, APG Logistics managing director.
-This volume, then, is the basis, but with the new 2,500 sq m facility and ample space for future expansion, Stockholm Arlanda will be in a position to attract much new perishables business through handling services including packaging, icing, re-packaging and palletizing, quality control, security, and e.g. screening of shipments.
-Not least the new requirements from June this year by the US TSA will bring about a dramatic change in the pattern of air transport of perishables like the Norwegian salmon to the US market.
-We will be able to perform the screening process in full conformance with the requirements and this will undoubtedly prove a major asset for us from the start, says Mr Longva.
