Feb 18, 2010 (newstodate): Opinions differ about the impact on Norway's salmon exports to the US market after the imposition of new screening requirements from summer 2010.
At least the leading exporting company in the market, Marine Harvest, remains cool amidst the general confusion.
-The 100 percent screening of all cargo, including perishables like salmon, applies only to freight carried on passenger aircraft, not freighters, says Jrgen Christiansen, Marine Harvest Corporate communications manager.
-We are also informed that the new regulations will take effect from August 3, 2010, and not June as otherwise reported.
-Part of our shipments go via London as belly cargo on passenger aircraft, and we perform the screening ourselves without any effect on delivery times. The remainder is lifted by freighters that are not comprised by the regulations, says Mr Christiansen.
Norway sends some 6-700,000 tonnes of salmon and marine products each year by air to the global market, primarily the Far East, and in 2009 volumes by air destined for the burgeoning US market alone increased to 3-4,000 tonnes per month.
