Feb 17, 2010 (newstodate): US requirements for 100 percent screening of all incoming air cargo shipments is still posing yet unsolved questions to the the industry.
The requirement for 100 percent screening of the large and growing Norwegian salmon export to the USA is now on the agenda by handling companies and carriers in the Nordic region.
-We still have time to make all preparations, but at present it is not even clear if the requirement will comprise also cargo on freighters or only cargo on passenger aircraft, says Arild Jaabaek, Sundt Atlanta Skybridge CEO.
-If screening is required on our twice-weekly Boeing 747-200F freighter services to the USA, time will at least not be a major problem as we normally receive the salmon shipments around six in the morning while the flight leaves only late afternoon.
-On the other hand, the new requirement will add costs to the operations as it will require the implementation of new scanners and manpower to operate them. Eventually the extra costs will land on the consumers, but affecting shippers and handling companies along the road. At least the costs will not be covered by the airfreight rate.
Sundt Atlanta Skybridge's cargo handling agent is Spirit Air Cargo at Oslo Gardermoen Airport.
