Feb 16, 2010 (newstodate): Ryanair is eyeing more flights from Lithuania - but not only from Kaunas Airport.
Marking a decisive break-through for Lithuania's Kaunas Airport, Ryanair on February 10, 2010, announced its choice of the airport as the carrier's 40th base - and its first in Central Europe.
From May 2, 2010, Ryanair will base two aircraft at Kaunas Airport and open flights to a further further nine destinations in addition to the nine already operated or announced.
But Ryanair is also keen to consider operations at other Lithuanian airport.
-Ryanair has presented its interest in opening flights also at Vilnius Airport and maybe even at Palanga Airport, and Lithuania will be open to considering these proposals, says Rimvydas Vastakas, Vice-Minister of Transport and communication.
-Ryanair traffic at Vilnius or Palanga would, however, not mean a retreat from Kaunas Airport serving as the carrier's new Baltic base. Rather, routes at Vilnius or Palanga would be a supplement to the carrier's traffic system at Kaunas and further increase the volume of air services between Lithuania and Europe.
-Generally speaking we are now seeing a resurgence of air services to and from Lithuania after a long period of decline. This is most encouraging, and things are really working our way again, says Mr Vastakas.
Based on the current announcements, Lithuania will have flights to a total of 41 European destinations during summer 2010 - a record-high number surpassing the levels when flyLAL was still operating.
