Feb 03, 2010 (newstodate): Ryanair is seeing success with its routes to and from Lithuania.
The carrier that is to open its ninth destination from Lithuania's Kaunas Airport is, however, very interested in gaining access to the country's capital airport, at Vilnius and has recently met with Lithuania's minister of transportation.
-Possibilities of direct air communication between the Lithuanian airports and other European cities are increasing. We see that the measures and plans already implemented by us help to make the work of the national airports more efficient and to attract airline companies that are expanding the geography of flight directions and considering further development plans. Airline companies see perspectives of working in the airports of the state, said Eligijus Masiulis, Lithuania's Minister of Transport and Communications.
The admission of low-cost carriers like Ryanair into Vilnius would, however, spell disaster for Kaunas Airport, Lithuania's second-largest airport.
-A state must have a capital airport to serve the needs of its government, its business circles and incoming tourists on legacy carriers. In this perspective, the role of Kaunas Airport is to provide facilities to serve the low-cost carriers supplementing the offerings of the legacy carriers at the capital airport, Arijandas Sliupas, Kaunas Airport general director, earlier told newstodate.
Besides Ryanair, Kaunas Airport is only served by airBaltic that provides a connection to Riga, in neighboring Latvia.
