Feb 12, 2010 (newstodate): Finnair Cargo has now confirmed the news of intentions to launch freighter flights, reported by newstodate on Thursday.
-Finnair Cargo is exploring the possibility of starting cargo flights between Asia destinations and Helsinki using its own and leased aircraft. The goal is to begin flights before summer 2010, a company statement reads.
-Growing cargo demand in the Asian market offers an opportunity to increase capacity between Asia and Europe. Traffic will be directed mainly from Asia to northern Europe, which is our domestic market area, says Antero Lahtinen, Finnair Cargo Managing Director.
Behind the plan for freighter service is the availability of two Finnair MD-11 aircraft that were converted to freighters under a contract with Aeroflot-Cargo that has since gone broke, and the 40 percent increase in volumes on Finnair Cargo's Asian traffic between Helsinki and nine Asian destinations.
