Feb 09, 2010 (newstodate): The global financial crisis took a heavy toll on Finnair Cargo through 2009. But trends are again encouraging, January's statistics show.
In January the carrier handled at total of 7,894 tonnes of cargo, which was an increase by 24.2 percent, y-o-y.
The growth was primarily driven by a rising demand in the Asian traffic that saw Finnair Cargo's volumes up by 40.2 percent, y-o-y, to 5,437 tonnes.
European volumes grew more modestly by 3.3 percent to 1,506 tonnes, and volumes on the North Atlantic routes were up 4.1 percent, to 546 tonnes.
The carrier's volumes on leisure flights increased by 82.4 percent to 213 tonnes, probably influenced also by North Atlantic shipments destined for Haiti and exports of Norwegian salmon for the US market.
As the carrier has downsized its capacity to match market requirements in the passenger segments, the over-all cargo load factor at 70.7 percent improved by 20.8 percentage-point.
The load factor in the Asian traffic rose even higher, attaining 76.3 percent after a 24.2 percentage-points hike.
