Dec 22, 2010 (newstodate): Swissport is monitoring the ground handling markets in Eastern Europe and beyond - but has no immediate plans for new advances.
-We are firmly established in Ukraine that is our mainstay in Eastern Europe, and business is also on solid grounds in Bulgaria, while we recently retreated from Hungary, says Mark Skinner, Swissport VP Business Development and Projects, Division Europe, Asia, Africa and Middle East.
-We opened up in Ukraine on June 1, 2006, with provision of handling services at Kiev Boryspil Airport in a JV with Ukraine Airlines International, and this year we added operations at Kharkov Airport in line with our strategy to grow business to other Ukrainean airports in light of the EURO 2012 and the country's economic recovery.
-Swissport Bulgaria was set up on August 7, 2006, and launched operations at Sofia Airport by early July 2007. Bulgaria has only one major airport operating all-year, while the country's other airports generate some 80 percent of their traffic only on a seasonal basis, which makes it difficult to sustain a year-round handling business.
-We left Hungary's Budapest Ferihegy Airport as we were unable to obtain a ramp handling license, and we need a full handling package to maintain a viable and profitable business.
-We are always observing markets in these regions and will be able to act whenever a sustainable business case emerges. But right now we have no plans for new projects in Eastern Europe on the agenda, says Mr Skinner.
