Dec 22, 2010 (newstodate): After several failed attempts to capitalize on the resources and facilities at Sweden's Luleaa Kallax Airport, Swedavia is now taking over the assets of Kallax Cargo.
The concept remains to attract carriers for uplift of cargo, primarily Norwegian seafood for export to markets in Asia, as exemplified by Korean Air Cargo's short-lived weekly freighter flights to Incheon, South Korea, in 2009-10.
So far the futile efforts have been driven by Kallax Cargo, owned by five transport and logistics partners in Sweden, Norway, and Finland: Meyership AS, Norway, Holm Shipping AS, Norway, Wiiks Transport AS, Norway, Kalles Bud och Transport AB, Sweden, and Kalottspedition OY, Finland, alongside the initial Swedish owners NCC, Norrporten och Luleaa County.
But Swedavia has now taken over the ramp equipment and freighter landing rights owned by Kallax Cargo, and plans are on the table for a further upgrading of the airport's passenger facilities as well as runway and taxiway systems by Swedavia.
Hopes are to secure EU financing of the projects that will aim at boosting both passenger and freighter traffic through the airport.
Luleaa Kallax Airport generated a total of 503 tonnes of cargo in 2009, and a total of 267 tonnes during the first 11 months of this year.
The state-owned company Swedavia, formerly LFV, operates 13 airports in Sweden
