Dec 03, 2010 (newstodate): Riga Airport is continuing its growth in airfreight volumes through 2010 - but November wasn't especially strong with only 4.8 percent increase in volumes.
What broke the trend?
-Volumes were fine up to November 16-17, and then dipped to below the usual with a nice recovery by the last few days of the November, and quite strong again this week, says Toms Andersons, airBaltic cargo head.
-It was affected by long weekend November 18-21 due to Latvia's Independence day, and also by Muslim holidays, November 16-21.
-As we are main driver with our transit product via Riga, we did see no cargo on key routes to Istanbul, Tashkent, or Amman, adding to the import/export freeze in Riga.
-Also we have now started the winter schedule, meaning a seasonal closure of flights on a number of routes, including Almaty, Yerevan, Tashkent, and Dushanbee.
-Once flights to these destinations are resumed with next year's summer schedule, volumes will go up again, says Mr Andersons.
