Dec 09, 2010 (newstodate): Re-opening of Stepanakert Airport in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region remains a key political issue.
In Armenia, the country's president has met recently with cabinet ministers and the region's representative to discuss the imminent re-opening of the airport in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region, under de-facto Armenian control since the war with Azerbaijan in the 90ies.
The airport has been inactive for more than 20 years, but it has been under recontruction for a few years with used equipment from the airports of Stepanavan and Gyumri, Armenia.
Also the construction of a new passenger terminal was completed in November, while the facility will be technically fully open for traffic from spring 2011.
Azerbaijan has, however, repeatedly protested against the start of flights from the airport and has threatened to take legal action if such plans materialize.
