Dec 03, 2010 (newstodate): EU is to take severe steps to boost security around air cargo traffic.
The EU Commission will especially focus on air cargo into EU from non-EU airport, and the measures will include defining criteria for identifying cargo that represents a particular risk and establishing mechanisms to allow the evaluation of security standards at non-EU airports.
EU member states will also be asked to implement the EU's system of supply chain security known as consignor validation, and to introduce new requirements before April 2013.
The Commission has recommended further investment in research to improve the performance of current detection technologies that will be carried out under the EU research framework program.
