Nov 12, 2010 (newstodate): Shorter night flight routes over a large part of Europe can benefit especially operators of cargo flights that are often performed during night-time.
As part of the harmonization of European airspace, shorter night routes are now being offered on 115 cross-border connections controlled by the air navigation service providers in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
The six countries have formed the Functional Airspace Block Europe Central that is working towards the goal of a joint airspace.
Today, FABEC has shortened 115 routes during the night, enabling the airlines to save approximately 1.481 million kilometres per year, translating into savings on flying times and emissions.
