Nov 12, 2010 (newstodate): Rolls-Royce has now announced their initial findings in the process to verify the cause of the Qantas Airbus A380 engine blowout.
-The investigations have led Rolls-Royce to draw two key conclusions. First, as previously announced, the issue is specific to the Trent 900.
-Second, the failure was confined to a specific component in the turbine area of the engine.
-This caused an oil fire, which led to the release of the intermediate pressure turbine disc.
-Our process of inspection will continue and will be supplemented by the replacement of the relevant module according to an agreed program, says the company in a release.
The engine troubles caused Qantas to ground its fleet of Airbus A380 aircraft, and later Singapore Airlines has also grounded three of its A380 aircraft for engine replacements.
More than 7.5 million passengers have so far been flying on one of the 39 A380 aircraft delivered, and orders for the aircraft currently stand at 234 from 17 customers.
