Nov 15, 2010 (newstodate): Plans for a new airport at Szombathely, in the west of the country, 10 km from the border with Austria, are progressing well.
Behind the project is is a group of Chinese and Hungarian investors as well as the regional government, and the Hungarian PM has been negotiating the issue with Chinese partners at as meeting in Shanghai two weeks ago.
This will be followed up by another meeting between the parties, and the Hungarian minister of economy is now in charge from the Hungarian side.
The next step will be the signing of an agreement, expected by the end of this month, and if everything continues to proceed smoothly, the start of construction will be summer 2011, with the first aircraft operation to take place in 2013.
The business plan envisages the proposed airport to serve both passenger and cargo traffic between Western Europe and China, building on estimates of 250,000 passengers and more than 100,000 tonnes of cargo per year when fully completed.
