Nov 02, 2010 (newstodate): Plans for developing Finland's Vaasa Airport into a new cargo hub may still be on the table, but at last for one player - DHL Express the issue is not crucial.
-We stopped flying into Vaasa Airport in 2008 and have since operated a daily flight between our hub at Leipzig and Helsinki and Turku, respectively, using boeing 737 freighters on the routes, says Kenneth Palmgren, DHL Express Finland general manager.
-The daily flight between Helsinki and Leipzig serves customers in Southern, Eastern and Northern Finland, while the flight between Turku and Leipzig serves customers in Western and Central Finland.
-Vaasa lies within four hours' trucking from both these cities, so we see no need for reintroducing flights to Vaasa, regardless of plans for new infrastructure there.
-We are also not aware that these plans are actually advancing, but they may be important for the local city government, says Mr Palmgren.
The Vaasa region is the largest energy cluster in the Nordic region, with companies including Wacon, ABB, and VEO relying heavily on access to ports, railways - and also air cargo facilities.
DHL Express also operates flights with an AN-26 from Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia, and with a Boeing 737 to St Petersburg, both connecting to the ex-Helsinki flight to Leipzig.
