Nov 25, 2010 (newstodate): NATO and Ukraine are now discussing final provisions for extending the lease of the heavy-duty transport aircraft Antonov An-124-100 Ruslan.
The contract, signed in 2005, is likely to be extended for two years before the end of 2010.
The contract between NATO member countries in the Strategic Airlift Interim Solution, SALIS, and Ruslan company took effect from February, 2006, and provides for the stationing of two AN-124 aircraft at Leipzig Halle Airport, while another four AN-124 aircraft will be allocated upon request as needed by the NATO and EU members of SALIS.
The AN-124-100 aircraft will provide the backbone of NATO's strategic uplift force till the delivery of the the fleet of Airbus A400M aircraft.
