Nov 22, 2010 (newstodate): Russia's Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport has announced its plans for establishing itself as Eastern Europe's leading cargo hub.
Its plans include the construction of a new 20,000 sq m multi-modal cargo complex to serve customers with integrated solutions for handling of air cargo, trucked cargo and rail cargo.
The planned complex will also include office space for forwarders, consignees, airlines, handling companies and service providers.
Wit the construction of the airport's third runway and the opening of a second flight zone, Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport aims at generating up to 80 percent of Russia's international cargo as well as 35 percent of the country's domestic cargo.
The airport estimates to boost its cargo volumes to a total of 280,000 tonnes in 2001.
Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport has traditionally been the country's leading airport as to international cargo, thanks to the Aeroflot hub there, while Moscow Domodedovo Airport has been the leading airport as to domestic cargo.
