Nov 15, 2010 (newstodate): Lithuania's Kaunas Airport is seeing its cargo volumes rising in 2010, with the process bolstered by incoming freighter flights from China, carrying transit goods for Russia and Central Europe.
A total of 496 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at Kaunas airport in October, 2010, an increase by 97.4 percent, y-o-y.
Of the total volume cargo was 343 tonnes, up 145 percent, while mail volumes grew by 43 percent to 159 tonnes.
In 2009 the airport's volumes dropped 38 percent, y-o-y, but a recovery is now safely in sight for full-year 2010 volumes.
By the end of September 2010, the Lithuanian logistics company Hoptrans launched its weekly IL-96-400T freighter flight operated by Polet Airlines from Shanghai to Kaunas Airport, connecting with the provider's own road feeder services from Kaunas to final points of destination in the Baltic, Central and Eastern European countries.
Hoptrans also operates own IL-76 freighter flights from China to Kaunas with ex-China exports to the Russian market, transferred unto road feeder trucks from the airport.
