Nov 05, 2010 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Karagandy International Airport is developing its role as a new cargo hub in Central Asia.
The airport is currently serving cargo carriers including ULS, Volga-Dnepr, Thai Cargo, Cargolux, Aeroflot, Jade Cargo, Atlas Air and others with transit and re-fueling facilities, and the list of carriers is growing.
But the airport is keen to develop also freighter traffic off-loading and loading cargo to promote its role as a regional distribution center to serve markets in the southern part of Central Asia, including Kazakhstan itself, Southern Siberia as well as northwestern China.
-We are currently in negotiations with two or three German carriers and expect some results from this to emerge in 2001, says Daulet Khamzin, Karagandy Int'l Airport CEO.
-To facilitate this role we are to set up a regional feeder traffic system comprising both trucking and regional air services, and we are in talks with some Kazakh carriers that are interested in providing these services, says Mr Khamzin.
Karagandy Airport has one 3,600m CAT II runway, and has seen only 158 hours of operational suspension over the last five years.
The Kazakh government has designated the airport as the country's cargo hub, which allows 5th Freedom Rights to all foreign carriers operating into Karagandy Int'l Airport.
