Nov 22, 2010 (newstodate): Greenland's politicians are soon to decide on the future of allocation of air services in the country's southern region.
A transport commission has worked out a report on the issue, and its recommendation is to move the hub for regional air services from the existing Narsarsuaq Airport to Qaqartoq.
The main argument for moving the air services hub is the fact that bulk of the population in the region lives in Qaqortoq, Narsaq and Nanortalik, while very few live in the area around Narsarsuaq. This creates needs for costly helicopter commuter traffic.
In the plans is the construction of a new airport at Qaqortoq with either a 1,199 or a 1,799 m runway, depending on which traffic the politicians expect to see into the region.
The politicians are expected to open final talks on the issue before the end of this year as the final report including inputs from the public hearings is presented.
