Nov 09, 2010 (newstodate): Plans for introducing Latvian ground handling services provider North Hub Services into Estonia's Tallinn Airport remain somewhat in the future.
NHS earlier announced its decision to set up a new company at Tallinn Airport by November 1, 2010, but this has boiled down to the Latvian carrier airBaltic's self-handling by NHS staff at the airport.
Until November 1, 2010, airBaltic was handled by Tallinn Airport GH - the airport's handling company.
-The airport is adhering to the EU rules that require the opening of the ground handling market once the airport reaches two million passengers annually, says Erik Sakkov, Tallinn Airport member of the management board.
-We have absolutely no problems with airBaltic's decision to introduce self-handling, and we are cooperating on very friendly terms with the carrier which we sincerely hope will bring about a continued strong increase in traffic and passenger volumes at Tallinn Airport, allowing for the liberalization of the ground handling market in few years from now, says Mr Sakkov.
In 2009 Tallinn Airport handled a total of 1.3 mio passengers, down from 1.8 in 2008.
By the end of October 2010, the airport has so far seen a total of 1,174,926 passengers, up 1.8 percent y-o-y.
