Nov 23, 2010 (newstodate): The EU Commission will ban all Afghan carriers from its airspace from November 23, 2010, irrespective of the safety standards of the individual airlines.
One airline to be hard hit by this is Safi Airways that is now set to acquire an airline in Northern Europe.
By this move the carrier will move registration of its aircraft to an EU-based carrier that will then continue operating Safi's route network that comprises flights from Kabul to Frankfurt.
The European Commission has repeatedly demanded Afghanistan to develop
its own Civil Aviation Authority along lines in accordance with ICAO standards.
But as the country has not complied with this, EU will ban all Afghan carriers from operations into EU airports.
Headquartered in Kabul and Dubai, Safi Airways is the first Afghan airline to be compliant with ICAO's safety standards and expects to be IOSA-certificated by January 2011.
Safi Airways that started operations from June 15, 2009, operates a fleet comprising one Airbus A320, one Airbus A340, two Boeing 737-300 and one Boeing 767200ER aircraft on routes between Kabul, Afghanistan, and the Middle East and Europe.
