Oct 19, 2010 (newstodate): IATA's e-freight: a grand vision materializing at snail's pace?
For SAS Cargo, the pace has at least been uneven.
-Our implementation of e-freight was linked to our launch of a new product, EuroeXpress, in 2009. This immediately boosted e-freight volumes to about 10 percent of our total bookings, says Anders Hundahl, SAS Cargo director products and prices.
-The timing, however, proved to be the worst imaginable, coinciding with the full collapse of the global finances and economy in a deep crisis hitting hard on air cargo. So the percentage of e-freight bookings fell to two-three percent that is also the status as of today.
-While e-freight, when implemented on a full scale, will bring costs savings and other benefits, it is today rather a costly affair as we maintain the full capability to handle e-freight while reaping no business returns.
-This is not to say, however, that SAS Cargo is not supporting e-freight. We are right now going over our strategies to be implemented in 2011, and the issue of e-freight is one item on the list.
-The question right now is whether to sit in the back seat in waiting for events to unfold, or to grasp the driver's wheel to gain command over the course. A decision will soon made on this.
-The volume of e-freight currently generated at SAS Cargo is primarily due to our partners, Jetpak and Trust Forwarding that are utilizing this tool in the significant Norwegian domestic parcel traffic, says Mr Hundahl.
