Oct 25, 2010 (newstodate): Russia's Petrozavodsk Airport, in the Russian Petrozavodsk region, is to be modernized.
The joint Military-Civilian airport is located in the region bordering Finland's Karelia, has long been planning for a much-needed upgrading, and the country's ministry of transportation is now to launch a construction program that will be completed by 2012.
High on the wishing-list of the region are new flights to Moscow and St Petersburg, as well as flights to Helsinki, and the ministry will also assist in negotiations with airlines to launch new routes when the airport has been modernized.
Flights are currently operated by Severstal Air Company using Yak-40 aircraft on routes to Moscow and Helsinki.
