October 25, 2010 (newstodate): Construction works to modernize Modlin Airport, in Central Poland, have now started and are planned for completion by the middle of 2012.
Since 2004, plans have been underway for transforming Modlin Airport, a former Soviet military airport, into a commercial airport to become an alternative to Warsaw Okecie Airport for low cost carriers.
The master plan by UK consultants Stanley Associates includes the construction of a small terminal facility, a medium-sized cargo terminal, and reserved sites for other potential industrial and semi-agricultural processing works in the region.
After commissioning, the airport with a 2,500 m runway will have the capacity of handling up to 1.5 million passengers per year.
The airport's current owners include the Military Property Agency with 38.6 percent of shares, the Mazovian Province with 34 percent, Polish Airports State Enterprise with 25.7 percent, and the town of Nowy Dwor Mazowiecki with 1.7 percent.
