Oct 12, 2010 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier airBaltic has launched the process of implementing air cargo electronic booking facilities.
-We took the first steps by mid-September, initially offering the facility in the Latvian cargo market where one freight forwarder is already using it on a daily basis, says Toms Andersons, airBaltic Head of Cargo.
-The new facility is actually a system providing access to CHAMP CargoSpot, and we are keen to roll it out gradually in markets where agents are ready to use it.
-We will implement the system first in the three Baltic markets where we have direct sales to agents. In a later phase we will extend it to markets where we are represented by GSAs.
-At this stage we are working to eliminate any snags in our internal systems, and we are thus taking a cautious approach to the eventual full implementation of electronic cargo bookings on airBaltic.
-After all, it requires some effort to change the habits and culture in the industry that will be reluctant to skip the phone calls in favor of electronic booking channels. But - that is the solution of the future in the cargo industry, as it has been in the air passenger industry for years now, says Mr Andersons.
